In the wake of the tragic gas explosion that rocked the Oroazi area of Obio/Akpor Local Government, Executive Chairman Ambassador Chijioke Ihunwo has taken swift action to prevent future disasters.
The explosion, which left several injured, has prompted a total ban on gas refilling businesses operating within residential areas across the LGA, Hitvibz reports.
Ihunwo offers aid to victims of Oroazi gas explosion
During a visit to the scene of the explosion and the Sonabel Hospital, where victims are receiving treatment, Ambassador Ihunwo expressed deep sorrow over the incident.
Breaking down in tears, he described the tragedy as both “pathetic” and “unfortunate.”
To provide immediate relief, the chairman announced that the local government would cover the victims’ medical expenses.
He demonstrated his commitment by releasing ₦3 million to the hospital for their treatment.
Speaking to reporters, Ihunwo shared that the incident was a wake-up call to enforce stricter safety measures, emphasising the administration’s responsibility to safeguard lives.

To prevent a recurrence of such tragedies, Ihunwo declared an immediate ban on gas refilling operations in residential neighborhoods across Obio/Akpor.
He explained that the measure was necessary to protect lives and property within the local government.
The chairman also revealed plans to establish a special committee tasked with enforcing the new regulation throughout the LGA.
“Let me also announce it here and now that henceforth, no one is permitted to run a gas refilling business in residential areas within Obio/Akpor and to ensure that we put law breakers to check, I will be putting in place a special committee with the mandate to move into the various streets and roads to enforce compliance,” he said.
He called on community leaders, including CDC chairmen and youth leaders, to support the initiative. Violators of the ban, he warned, would face arrest and prosecution.
