The chairman of Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers state, Hon. Okechukwu Akara Nwaogu, on Sunday raided two illegal oil refinery sites in Umuosi-Ndoki community in the LGA.
Acting on the order of the state governor to shut down illegal oil refinery sites in the state, the Oyigbo Chairman and security operatives, including men from the Joint Task Force, Civil Defense, and OSPAC, invaded the sites.
The chairman grimaced at the scene and the level of damage done in the area after having trouble approaching the refinery sites due to its severe and marshy condition.
In an interview with the press, Hon Akara highlighted how the bunkering activities had entirely damaged not only the environment, but also the lives of innocent residents in the neighbourhood.
“It is so disheartening to behold a site as deadly as this in our locality. The lives of our people and Eco system will remain greatly endangered should we fold our arms and watch these criminals perpetrate this barbaric activity“
Hon Akara, who characterised the bunkers as dehumanising, reaffirmed his willingness to work with Governor Nyesom Wike to ensure that Oyigbo continues to remain safe and free of illegal oil bunkers and their activities, as he quickly ordered the total destruction of the site and the illegally refined crude products discovered there.
