The Chairman of Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers state, Hon Okechukwu Akara Nwaogu on Tuesday supervised the distribution of the improved variety cassava stem donated by the state government to the farmers in the LGA.
Recall that the Rivers state Government on July 12, 2021 distributed ten thousand bundles of cassava stems to farmers to boost cassava production and ensure food security in the State.
Commissioner for Agriculture, Fred Kpakol, during the distribution disclosed that the TME 419 cassava stem is an improved variety of cassava that has a maturity period of six months from the day of planting.
The Oyigbo Council boss ensured that the stem was distributed evenly amongst the 10 (ten) wards of the Local Government Area.
He urged farmers to utilize the special cassava stem to increase productivity.
He further implored them to cultivate the special cassava stem in different communities to ensure that it does not go into extinction in the LGA.
