Nwigo Nwalara, the father of a 12-year-old rape victim, has been remanded in custody at the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre for allegedly receiving N800,000 from the suspect, Collins Azunna, 39, in order to cover up the case.suspect

The suspect was also remanded by Chief Magistrate F. N Amanze, who delayed the case to January 13, 2022.

That came after the defense lawyer, Edwin Nwoka, said that the suspect was prosecuted in court because he refused to pay the victim’s family extra money.

Ebi Igwe, the lawyer for the girl’s father, said his client originally refused to accept the money but eventually consented after a female police officer in charge of the case at the Eleme Police Division pleaded with him to do so.

Meanwhile, civil society organizations have urged relevant agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and guarantee that justice is served in order to put an end to such horrible crime.
