On Monday afternoon, a fire at the JDP roundabout by Peter Odili Road had goods worth millions destroyed, making it the seventh fire occurrence in Port Harcourt in a week.
A shop with two tricycles for sale, as well as a cash value of N500,000, were among the properties alleged to have been destroyed by the fire.
According to a source, the fire was started by criminals from a nearby community who attacked a shop selling metal scraps with fuel and other dangerous weapons.
“After a brief quarrel with the owner of the metal scrap shop, the thugs poured fuel on the shop and set it ablaze—which affected other shops,” the source said.
Wisdom, the owner of one of the stores who designs Tarpaulin coverings for tricycles, said he had just filled his shop after returning from Aba the day before the hoodlums allegedly attacked the area and set shops on fire.
