Following Governor Wike’s order to shut down illicit oil refinery sites in Rivers state, Dame Hon Anengi Barasua, the Chairman of Bonny Local Government, has demolished some illegal bunkering sites in the LGA.
On Monday, the Chairman led a crack team of government security agencies, Ijaw Youth Council members, and LGA appointees to dismantle a live oil bunkering camp at Banigo-Egbelu near Oputumbi Creek in the Bonny LGA.
The illegal bunkering site, which is reported to be the principal processing site for defective petroleum produce in the area, is mostly to blame for water pollution, fish deaths, and increasing stench in the Bonny Local Government Area and its surrounding communities.
When the crack squad was discovered, the bunkerers bolted, abandoning their work tools, which were all recovered, and setting fire to the camp.
