Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State, has acknowledged that in 2018, he attempted to lure President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu to join the PDP.
This was announced by Governor Wike in a statement released on Wednesday, following a special state dinner held in Tinubu’s honor at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
The Rivers State Governor revealed that he visited Tinubu at his residence in Lagos and tried to convince him to join the PDP, but Tinubu turned down the invitation.
“I met him first in 2018 around 2:00am in his house-Bourdillon. was sent to go and talk to him, how he can join us. I went to him, I said ‘sir, I hear you can’t find your feet again in APC. Why not join us and let’s support one of these our candidates to win the 2019 election?” he said.
Wike claimed that;
“He asked me. Who are these your candidates, I mentioned them. He said look, if it is these ones you have, I will support (Muhammadu) Buhari 200 times. He told me that and respected him,” he added.
On the other hand, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the President-elect, complimented Governor Wike for welcoming him to Rivers State to officially launch some of his major initiatives.
Tinubu reiterates his commitment to keeping all of the electoral promises he made to Nigerians.
He said that they will all work together to keep their commitments because government is a serious business and building Nigeria is a serious undertaking.
The President-elect also took the opportunity to discuss how he handled Governor Nyesom Wike’s request for a reimbursement of the money used to build flyovers on state-owned federal roadways.
“I am personally grateful to the man who brought me here. He didn’t ask for a personal commitment. He asked for a policy commitment which an incoming president has no authority to offer and approve,” Tinubu said.
He added that;
“There can only be one president at a time, I cannot commit to expenditure on behalf of the outgoing president when my tenure has not started.”
However, Tinubu emphasized that maintaining Nigeria’s unity was non-negotiable and promised to treat everyone equally.
