Rivers United coach, Finidi George, don yarn say recruitment go dey very important for the club to move forward, especially after another tough night for CAF Champions League, where dem lose 1–0 to Zambia side Power Dynamos for Uyo.
That loss wey happen on Sunday make the NPFL champions still dey bottom of Group A, no win yet for the competition.
The result make Finidi sit down reason well about the team performance, mentality, and how the squad take be, na weytin hitvibz dey yan be dat.
CAF Champions League wahala show Rivers United slow start
Finidi talk say Rivers United no enter the match sharp-sharp, even though na game wey dem suppose win. That one allow Power Dynamos settle down and arrange themselves well.
“I feel say we start the game slowly. Na match wey we wan win, but we no start am well.
We dey pass ball too much for back, and that one give dem time to organise.
For second half after dem score, we come push everything make we try get equaliser. We create plenty chances, but goal no gree come.”
Kondwani Chiboni score the only goal five minutes after second half start, and that goal give Power Dynamos their first-ever group stage win for CAF Champions League.
Even though Rivers United press well for later part of the game, goal still no show.
“E pain us well. For second half, I believe say we suppose score even two or three goals, but e no happen.
Na football be that. You go just hail your opponent for how dem defend well and the lucky goal wey dem get. We concede from just small pull-out. E no good for football, but e just unlucky for us,” Finidi talk.
Finidi talk about mindset, attitude and need for better recruitment
As dem dey look ahead to the last two CAF Champions League matches, Finidi emphasize say mentality from first whistle gats change.
“We still gats continue and change our attitude, especially for first half.
For game like this, you gats dey aggressive for first 20 minutes, but I feel say we too calm.”
Even though qualification hard well-well, Rivers United no wan give up yet.
“We want get our first win. We know say we go play the top two teams for the last two games, but anything fit happen for football.
Qualification hard, but e still possible.
We wan show character and at least win one match for the remaining games.”
Finidi also talk about wetin the club fit learn long-term, especially when e come to building squad.
“We no need change plenty things. If we find ourselves for group stage next season, we just need recruit well.
Add some new players to the ones we already get.”
He explain say CAF Champions League don serve as big experience for the current players.
“For these players, na big learning.
If you remove one or two players from this squad, none of them don even play Confederation Cup before.
Dem go learn.”
On the matter of goal-scoring wahala, Finidi link am to general problem for Nigerian league.
“Na general issue. For league, top scorer fit finish season with like 10 goals.
Players dey play 32–33 matches and score just 8–10 goals — that one small too much.”
He add say:
“E no be training problem. Na mindset and confidence to score goals.
We go manage wetin we get.”
Even with the disappointment, Finidi say encouragement still very important.
“We gats encourage them because na these same players we go use.
If we begin condemn them now, the whole season go hard for everybody.”
Rivers United go next face defending champions Pyramids FC from Egypt, while Power Dynamos don move up to third place for Group A and go host RS Berkane next.
