First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, don donate N2 billion give Abia State Government to support the growth of Akwete fabric, one respected handwoven cloth wey originate from Akwete community for Abia State.
Mrs Tinubu make the announcement for Aba on Tuesday during her visit to Abia State to celebrate and promote the historic Akwete weaving heritage for Ukwa East Local Government Area, na weytin Hitvibz dey yan be dat.
N2bn Donation to Grow Akwete Fabric Industry
She tok say the donation go help develop the Akwete production centre, create more jobs and strengthen Abia economy.
According to her, the money go also support Abia State Government effort to preserve the age-long weaving tradition and make sure say future generations no lose the craft.
She hail the uniqueness and beauty of Akwete fabric, wey women for Abia dey weave with cotton, raffia and silk using vertical looms. The cloth dey popular because of im bright colours and detailed geometric patterns.
“I really dey amazed by all the richness wey Akwete fabric represent.
“I love our traditional clothes because our tradition and culture na wetin show who we be. The day we lose am, we fit no remember where we come from again.
“Dem pass this craft from one generation give another. Na special work wey people dey do with love, patience and endurance.
“This Akwete handmade fabric tradition dey very important to the women wey dey make am, and we need to encourage dem make dem pass am give the next generation.”
First Lady Tell Youths Make Dem Preserve Akwete Fabric Heritage
Mrs Tinubu don even encourage young Nigerians make dem embrace their culture, especially traditional clothes wey connect young people with older generations.
According to her, everybody suppose dey proud of their cultural heritage and wear African traditional outfits with confidence.
“We no suppose allow our children forget our culture.
“To the women of Akwete, I hear una cry. I dey here today to tell all Nigerians and Igbo people say time don reach to carry Akwete fabric go national level.
“So, all the notable sons and daughters of Igbo land suppose stand up to preserve this culture. As for me, I dey donate N2 billion for this project.”
She even promise Governor Alex Otti say if President Bola Tinubu win second term for the 2027 presidential election, she go wear wrapper and buba wey dem make with Akwete fabric for the inauguration ceremony.
Governor Alex Otti and im wife, Mrs Priscilla Otti, thank the First Lady for the donation, saying the support go greatly transform Akwete fabric production for Abia State.
Otti describe the visit as one important step to preserve the indigenous weaving tradition.
According to am, Abia State Government don dey work with Akwete weavers since 2023 to reposition the industry and increase the economic value of the fabric.
The governor add say the state government dey remove challenges wey dey slow down the growth of the centuries-old craft and dey also introduce technology to improve production and make Akwete fabric compete better for the global market.
Otti also praise President Bola Tinubu for the economic reforms, especially the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of the foreign exchange market.
