Don’t abandon your responsibility to security agencies, governor Wike charges Federal government during launch of the 2022 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
The Rivers State governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, has emphasized the importance of the Federal Government not abdicating its obligation of providing for the welfare of men and officers of the security agencies in the States.
Wike states this at the launch of the 2022 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) Emblem Appeal Fund on Wednesday at Government House Port Harcourt, adding that the state governments are simply providing required support
He promised that his administration will not waver in its support for Nigerian military men and commanders who had battled valiantly to keep the country united at tremendous personal cost.
Governor Wike said that, while January 15th is designated as National Remembrance Day, the Emblem Appeal Fund Launch is held earlier in the year to generate funds to support Nigerian Legionnaires.
“What we are merely doing is to support. What is the federal government doing for you? So, everything should not be left in the hands of the State.”
In response to a request for a secretariat for the Nigerian legion, Governor Wike questioned what the legion’s leadership did with the monetary aid it receives each year.
He finds it perplexing that the legionnaires in the State are unable to furnish themselves with a fundamental operating facility such as a secretariat.
The governor said that the Rivers State Government alone had donated not less than N150 million to them annually in the last six years of his tenure, and that if the money had been carefully managed, they could have equipped them with a secretariat without going hand-in-cap to government.
“If you check for the six years, I’ve launched this emblem with not less than N20 million in every year. And check each January 15th, I have given you not less than N150million. So, when you calculate, you can have your own secretariat,” Wike said.
The governor encouraged the federal government not to delegate security agency responsibility to the states.
“The military is under the federal government, the police is under the federal government. So don’t shift responsibility of the federal government to states. What we are merely doing is to support,” the governor said.
