While condemning the act, DCF Audu Alfa stated that efforts must be made to educate communities on how to respond to emergencies.
According to eyewitnesses, the boat’s driver attempted to start the engine when it ignited.
Others claimed the driver was puffing on a cigarette. Timber, crayfish, various food items, and illegally processed petroleum products were claimed to also be on board.
Another eyewitness claimed that when the tragedy occurred, a mother of four children, including a newborn, had simply left the boat to go buy food.
Meanwhile, the injured were all transferred to the teaching hospital of Rivers State University.
