The creation of the Electoral Offences Desk at the Force Criminal Investigations Department Headquarters in Abuja has been approved by Inspector General of Police – Usman Baba.
The IGP also ordered its implementation at State Commands across the country, with State Desk Officers being the Assistant Commissioners of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Departments, FCID.
This was disclosed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.
According to him, the Electoral Offences Desk Officers’ responsibility includes gathering and investigating all electoral offenses and complaints from the public in order to determine culpability in accordance with the modified Electoral Act 2022.
He explained that the goal was to establish the culpability of the allegations in accordance with the modified Electoral Act 2022, as well as to file charges with relevant jurisdictional courts in order to pursue legal action.
He added that the I-G also instructed the Desk Officers to begin their work right away in light of a few isolated cases discovered during the pre-election period.
According to him, operatives of the Police Command in Nasarawa State have detained 24 people for alleged political thuggery in accordance with this mandate.
He noted that the individuals were apprehended at Minki Suites on Keffi-Akwanga Road after reliable and concrete intelligence led to their detention.
The alleged thugs, who are believed to be loyal to a candidate in the Nasarawa West Senatorial District primary, arrived at the hotel in a convoy of seven luxury automobiles, according to Adejobi.
Eight pump action weapons, two locally produced revolver guns, 37 rounds of live bullets, four bulletproof vests, and 27 cellphones were among the goods confiscated from the suspects, according to him.
