Speaking at a press briefing, Dr. Oreh acknowledged that cholera remains a significant public health concern, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, and assured residents of the state government’s commitment to supporting, responding to, and containing the disease, Hitvibz reports.

Dr. Oreh reported that in the past four weeks, 16 suspected cases of acute watery diarrhoea were recorded in three communities in Andoni Local Government Area, resulting in two deaths.

However, she confirmed that the situation has been brought under control, with no active cases or outbreaks currently in the state.

To prevent the spread of cholera, residents are advised to ensure the safety of drinking water, practice good hygiene, prepare and consume food safely, stop open defecation, and refrain from bathing or swimming in potentially contaminated water bodies.

The state government has pre-positioned commodities in historical hotspots, built the capacity of health personnel, and commenced community health education.

The infectious disease treatment centre at Rivers State University is ready to manage cases if necessary.

Dr. Oreh urged residents to follow these advisories and seek medical help if ill, emphasising that collective effort is crucial in ensuring community safety.
