Rivers State Government has withdrawn the criminal charges against former Minister of Transportation, Chibuke Amaechi, the Governorship Candidate of APC, Tonye Cole and five others.
The Rivers State Government had filed a criminal suit, accusing them of selling government assets.
When the matter resumed for ruling on the legality of a private lawyer to prosecute the matter, the Attorney General of the state and lawyer to the Rivers State Government, Zaccheus Adangor informed the court that he is withdrawing the suit.
But, lawyers for APC, Mr Amaechi and Mr Cole argued that withdrawing the suit is an abuse of court process and asked the court to dismiss the criminal charges if the suit must be withdrawn.
Hitvibz gathered that the presiding Judge, Justice Okobule Gbasam after heated arguments, struck out the suit as well as the charges against APC and others.
Meanwhile, the APC governorship candidate in Rivers State, Tonye Cole, has reacted to the Rivers State government’s withdrawal of criminal charges against him.
Mr Cole in a statement said the state government had hoped to use its power to intimidate the judiciary to do its bidding, but the judiciary has shown it cannot be used to fight political battles.
