The prime suspect in yesterday’s self-detonated dynamite explosion during a pro-Wike protest has been found and arrested. The incident took place near Hotel Presidential in Rivers State.
Following the explosion, the suspect was rushed to the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) by several individuals who fled the scene immediately after dropping him off, except for one person who stayed behind, Hitvibz reports.
The suspect is currently detained by the Nigerian Police at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital.
Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, alerted the public about the development.
She stated that after the incident, the state government instructed all hospital facilities to be vigilant and report any patients with injuries related to a blast or traumatic upper limb amputation.
“When a young man was brought to the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital with injuries supposedly from a road traffic accident, our prepared medical personnel quickly realized that the injuries were inconsistent with such an accident and more likely caused by a blast,” Dr. Oreh explained.
The individual arrived at the hospital semi-conscious and was immediately taken to the theater for resuscitation.
The medical team promptly informed the Rivers State Government, the Commissioner of Police, and the Rivers State Ministry of Health about the patient’s presence while providing emergency care.
Dr. Oreh assured the public that the patient is currently stable.
The hospital management is working closely with the Rivers State Police Command to ensure the facility’s security and to support the ongoing police investigation.
“We need to inform the public that this is the latest update following the explosion during the protest in Port Harcourt,” Dr. Oreh stated.
Recall that during the pro-Wike protest on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, in Port Harcourt, an explosive suspected to be dynamite was detonated by one of the protesters near Hotel Presidential.
The injured protester was initially feared dead until Dr. Oreh confirmed that he was brought to RSUTH and is currently alive and receiving medical attention.
