Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has donated N500 million to PAMO University of Medical and Sciences (PUMS).
Governor Wike presented the money during the first PUMS convocation ceremony in Port Harcourt on Saturday.
The governor also awarded a postgraduate scholarship to the overall best graduating student, as well as a N5 million prize to each of the best graduating students in each department.
During the convocation, Wike praised Dr. Peter Odili, the former governor of Rivers State, for founding the first and only private medical university in the whole of South-South geopolitical zone.
Governor Wike was also praised by Dr. Peter Odili, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, for awarding scholarships to over 600 Rivers State students to pursue medicine and associated medical courses at PAMO University.
While Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, who delivered the convocation lecture, said private universities have continued to play an important part in Nigeria’s national development.
He added that PAMO University is currently the 19th best private university in the country, and the 35th best out of 200 universities.
