INEC claims it has very little role to play in in how political parties choose their candidates for elections through direct primaries.
The Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman, Yakubu Mahmood stated this in a meeting with members of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation in Abuja,
He claimed that it is the political parties, not the umpire, who are responsible for the conduct and funding of direct primaries.
The meeting comes after the House passed a resolution directing the committee to work with INEC on the cost implications of political parties holding direct primaries, as outlined in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill for 2021.
