Rivers State governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has declared that Nigerians have moved on after accepting the election results and what the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was able to do.
Wike stated this at the swearing-in ceremonies for the chairs and members of the Rivers State Primary Healthcare Management Board and the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) at Government House in Port Harcourt.
Governor Wike believes that while no election is perfect, it is always desirable if they can perceive improvements over the previous one, adding that this will give room for voters to have faith in the electoral system.
According to Wike, no matter the shortcomings, you’ll see that there has been a decrease in violence, which is crucial.
Wike emphasized that the Nigerian electoral process has historically been marred by assassination material theft, and improper use of security; hence, INEC should be commended for their efforts in the 2023 polls.
“Nigerians should commend INEC that they reduced the level of violence, the level of death because without this BIVAS, before we were fighting with security agencies, they were carrying electoral materials, hijack electoral officials, but now it is difficult.” – Wike said.
The governor addressed the worrying incidence that no one ever seems to be penalized or prosecuted in a way that would serve as a deterrent to others when apprehended and found guilty of an electoral infraction.
He did express the hope that INEC would receive more funding from the federal government so that they will be capable of performing better in the upcoming elections.
