The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, stated that he was devastated to learn of the death of Emeritus Professor Nimi Dimkpa Briggs, a former vice chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt.

The governor referred to the passing of the highly regarded obstetrics and gynecology professor—who had previously held the positions of chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) and the Rivers State Economic Advisory Council—as a sad occasion for the Rivers State government and its residents.

Governor Wike said that Professor Briggs was not only a superb obstetrics and gynecology instructor but also a shrewd administrator who was devoted to the welfare of all people.

The governor acknowledged Prof. Briggs‘ enormous efforts when he was a member of RSIEC and the Rivers State Economic Advisory Council.

Wike emphasized that future generations will continue to find inspiration in his determination, vision, and continuous pursuit of a better and more progressive Rivers State.

“I am very shocked and sad to hear that Emeritus Professor Nimi Dimkpa Briggs has passed on. He was indeed symbol of commitment and dedication to the medical profession, our dear Rivers State and the nation. His contributions to public health and service were immeasurable.” – Wike said.

As the Vice Chancellor of the top university, Prof. Briggs worked diligently to advance academic excellence and the transformation of the University of Port Harcourt’s infrastructure, in Wike’s opinion proving that he was unquestionably visionary.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Rivers State, wish to express my profound condolences to Prof Briggs’ wife, his children, extended family and friends. I pray God to grant you all the fortitude to bear this devastating loss.” – Wike said.
