In an emergency Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting held on Saturday, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) showed solidarity with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) by adopting its position against the removal of fuel subsidy.
The decision was reached unanimously by members present, raising concerns about potential social unrest and protests due to the abrupt removal of the subsidy.
Led by the National President, Chris Isiguzo, and the National Treasurer, Bamidele Atunbi, the NUJ CWC acknowledged the potential benefits of redirecting subsidy allocations towards infrastructure development and job creation.
However, they expressed worries about the adverse effects of skyrocketing petroleum product prices and high inflation, which have significantly reduced the purchasing power of citizens.
In light of these concerns, the NUJ CWC has instructed all State Councils of the Union to mobilize their members for a nationwide protest starting from Wednesday, June 7, 2023.
The protests are scheduled to take place if the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNCPL) fails to reverse the newly implemented price regime in the oil sector.
The NUJ, as a prominent and influential voice in the media industry, aims to amplify the public’s discontent with the sudden removal of fuel subsidy and urge the government to reconsider its decision.
This move emphasizes the journalists’ commitment to supporting the welfare and interests of the Nigerian people.
As tensions rise and citizens demand accountability, all eyes will be on the upcoming nationwide protests and the response of the Nigerian government.
Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as the nation unites to make their voices heard.
