Former Acting Chairman of Oyigbo Local Government Area in Rivers State, Hon. Innocent Ajaelu, has voiced his concerns over the condition of the LGA, claiming they’ve been neglected by the state government, despite its significant contributions to the nation’s economy.
Situated at the crossroads of Rivers and Abia states, Oyigbo LGA boasts its role as the home of the Afam Power Station and numerous multinational corporations.
While speaking over the weekend, Ajaelu shed light on the prevailing issues that have left the local government area grappling with challenges.
He pointed out the dire lack of functional roads and hospitals, painting a vivid picture of the adversity faced by the community’s residents.
Ajaelu’s disappointment is particularly poignant when it comes to the Oyigbo-Afam Road project.
Despite being a work in progress, he criticized the slow pace of development and held both the Rivers State government and the contracting company accountable for the situation.
He highlighted a glaring disparity in the allocation of resources.
While the construction of the Oyigbo-Afam Road, which is vital for the area’s connectivity and accessibility, has progressed at a snail’s pace, other projects such as the Rumuokwurushi flyover have advanced significantly.
Ajaelu questioned the reasons behind this delay and urged for a swift resolution. The repercussions of the incomplete road project are dire.
Communities and villages in the vicinity are grappling with restricted access, leading to a surge in transportation costs.
The financial burden on residents traveling between Obeakpu and Oyigbo Town has skyrocketed, reaching up to N3,000, the Former Chairman lamented.
In Ajaelu’s eyes, the neglect experienced by Oyigbo is multifaceted.
From the absence of basic amenities like hospitals and roads to the lack of employment opportunities, he painted a stark portrait of a community left to fend for itself.
The local population feels alienated and let down by the Rivers State government’s lack of support.
