This came after affected pensioners had been organizing peaceful protests and prayer sessions on the streets of Port Harcourt for over six years in an attempt to raise the attention of the Rivers State Governor to their suffering.
Ijeoma Samuel, the Director-General of the Rivers State Pension Board, said the payments would be made in batches in a statement released in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.
Samuel also instructed all individuals who participated in the first round of the exercise to bring their retirement identification cards and other pertinent documentation.
He stated that the exercise was just for people who had been covered by the first batch of retirees up until June 2014.
His Excellency, Chief. Barrister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has graciously approved the immediate commencement of payment of outstanding Gratuity, Monthly Pension Arrears and Death benefits for Retirees in the Rivers State Public Service.
