The US government, however, has stated that it does not have a favoured presidential candidate in the upcoming election.

Will Stevens, the general consul of the United States in Nigeria, made this statement on Saturday during a town hall gathering hosted by the Niger-Delta Open Observatory (NOGO) in Asaba, the Delta region’s capital.

He claims that the US government’s primary concern is ensuring that the election is free, fair, and devoid of violence.

Stevens declared that anyone who incites electoral violence would not be granted a visa by the US government.

When Nigerians come to vote, it shows the strength of democracy to the rest of the world. The US does not have a preferred candidate, full stop! We are not interested in a particular party or candidate. What we are interested in is free, fair, and credible elections that represent the people.” – he said.

He added that;

These elections are important. Nigeria is the fifth largest democracy in the world; so, when the people of Nigeria come to vote, they are showing the strength of democracy to the rest of the world. We in the United States will discourage any politicians, citizens, or other parties who are encouraging electoral violence or seeking to undermine the electoral process,” Stevens said.

Recall that certain people were subject to visa restrictions by the US government because of their participation in the governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa in 2020.

Stevens declared in November 2022 that the US government has set aside $50 million for the funding, training, and technical assistance of journalists and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in preparation for the 2023 general elections in Nigeria.
