Principals of government-owned schools have received a stern warning from the Rivers State Government through the Commissioner for Education, Professor Prince Chinedu Mmom JP.
The commissioner stated that principals should refrain from granting access to school facilities under their control to people or organizations without proper authorization from the Ministry of Education.
The warning was given by Prof. Mmom on Tuesday during a meeting with the principals at the Government Girls Secondary School in Rumuokwuta.
Prof. Mmom declared that moving forward, he would have to approve any use of the government-owned facilities in the schools.
The Commissioner streesed that all Principals and Head Teachers must completely abide by this direction, and those who fail to do so run the risk of losing their employment.
“Any body who wants to use any government facility under your care should apply to the commissioner for Education through the Chairman of the Senior Secondary Schools Board or the Chairman of UBE Board to the principal who will make recommendation to the board and the board to me for approval“. – he said.
The commissioner claims that after many unannounced visits to certain schools, the governor was shocked to discover that some principals were renting out school premises to organizations that vandalized and stole property from the schools, which is why he issued this order.
In addition, he stated that the principal of the Senior Secondary in a school with Junior and Senior Secondary Schools is the head and overall Boss of the school and that the Principal of the Junior Secondary should collaborate with the Principal of the Senior Secondary for the advancement of their schools while urging them to put an end to the power struggle currently occurring in some schools.
He further threatened to move the Principals in question if he found any evidence of a conflict between them on who should be in charge.
