Speaking during a courtesy visit by the House of Representatives Committee on Ports and Harbours, Governor Fubara emphasised that bitter politics has left vital port facilities in a moribund state, stifling their potential to drive economic growth in the region, Footballrover reports.

Addressing the committee members at the Government House in Port Harcourt, Governor Fubara lamented that historical political animosities, dating back sixteen years, have thwarted efforts to develop the state’s ports.

He stressed that overcoming these challenges is crucial to leveraging the ports’ potential revenue streams, which would significantly boost the state’s treasury and spur infrastructural expansion.

However, he went on to question the benefit if the state continues to decline.

The only reason we are all struggling is to control the Treasury. The Treasury will also get fatter if the sea ports are working because revenue will increase. Your plan for expansion will also become large because your internally generated revenue will be large,” he said.

He cautioned against succumbing to divisive politics, urging stakeholders to prioritise unity and collective progress for Rivers State.

Acknowledging the Committee’s visit despite opposition, Governor Fubara urged further collaboration to enhance the state’s economic development, admitting the important roles of education, healthcare, and commerce in driving holistic development.

He highlighted Rivers State as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s blue economy, citing the strategic importance of the Bonny channels for national economic vitality.

Governor Fubara also addressed recent community grievances at the Port Harcourt International Airport, ensuring resolution of issues concerning local employment and corporate responsibilities.

He said agreements were reached on measures to resolve the challenges between the community and the airport authorities.

He expressed concern over the recent employment of about 53 or 54 individuals from Abuja, with none from the local community included in the list forwarded for documentation.

He noted that such situations naturally provoke reactions.

However, he pledged interventions to prevent future disruptions, affirming his commitment to fostering a conducive environment for sustainable development.

But blocking the entrance does not show a good understanding of a people that wants development. We agreed that going forward, such things will not happen again,” he said.

Governor Fubara rallied support for his administration’s vision, asserting that current challenges are transient and that Rivers State will emerge stronger.

He called for resilience amidst ongoing transformations, ensuring the state’s continued trajectory towards prosperity.

Chairman of the House Committee on Ports and Harbours, Hon. Nnolim Nnaji, praised Governor Fubara’s leadership and the collaborative efforts of Rivers State’s National Assembly members, highlighting their dedication to advancing the state’s interests.
