The fire broke out near the Nigeria Railway Station in Ilorin metropolis.

It was said to have come from a burned-out garbage dump adjacent to the shops.

Hassan Adekunle, a spokesman for the state Fire Service, said eight businesses were affected, although only four shops in Ilorin were severely damaged.

Although it was a late call, firemen were able to perform excellently well by eliminating the ravaging fire on time. And out of the eight shops in the vicinity, four shops were burnt by the fire,” Adekunle said.

Adekunle added that;

Mr. Hammed, one of the eyewitnesses of the incident was the one who summoned the firefighters to the scene of incident.”

He quoted Prince Falade Olumuyiwa, the state Fire Service director, as saying that citizens in the state should always be safe by not letting garbage dumps burn unattended.
