The Rivers State Ministry of Education, led by Honourable Commissioner Dr. Ovy Chinedum Chukwuma, is set to crack down on private schools operating without government approval.
In a bold move, the Commissioner announced today during a school resumption compliance tour in Port Harcourt that such schools will be shut down if they fail to comply with regulations, Hitvibz reports.
Dr. Chukwuma emphasised that private schools without the necessary approval from the Ministry of Education must cease operations immediately.
He stressed that this was no longer “business as usual” for non-compliant institutions and urged them to seek the proper authorization before reopening.
The Commissioner warned that private schools neglecting to pay their annual renewal fees would face sanctions.
He revealed that the Ministry is taking decisive steps to sanitize the educational system in Rivers State, ensuring that only schools that meet the required standards can operate.
During the inspection, Dr. Chukwuma praised some of the students for their commitment and encouraged them to inform their peers who had not yet returned to school that classes had resumed.
He assured them that teachers are ready and available to guide them in their studies.
Looking ahead, the Commissioner hinted at the state government’s plans for a massive renovation of primary and secondary schools across Rivers State, aiming to create an improved learning environment for students.
One of the teachers, Mrs. Jane Owumazuke from Government Secondary School Elekahia, expressed her excitement to be back in the classroom.
She called on students to return promptly for the new academic session and make the most of their education.
Students across the schools visited, including Community Secondary School Oroworokwo, Chokma International Academy, and Government Secondary School Elekahia, shared their joy at being reunited with friends and teachers after the long holiday, promising to focus on their studies in the new term.
