Sony is buying Destiny maker Bungie for $3.6 billion.

The wave of consolidation continues to sweep across the Gaming industry as Sony splashes out $3.6 Billion to purchase Bungie, makers of Destiny video game.

On Monday  21st January 2022, Bungie, the developer behind the Halo and Destiny franchises, reached a deal with PlayStation maker Sony to buy Bungie in a deal that is worth $3.6 Billion. This is one of Sony’s biggest purchases although it is a fraction of what Microsoft paid for Activision Blizzard

PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan told GamesIndustry.biz Monday that the deal had been in the works for nearly half a year, and says there are plans for more acquisitions in the future.

Bungie is one of the premier game developers in the industry. The studio started in 1990 developing games for the Apple Mac computer. They have also partnered with Microsoft from 2001 to 2007 when they produced their hit video game HALO.

They left Microsoft and then partnered with Activision Blizzard.  This partner led to yet another block buster game, Destiny in 2014. Destiny 2, the sequel was released in 2017 and till date remains Bungie’s biggest asset making the company an estimated $200 million in revenue.

Bungie said in 2020, that the Destiny franchise is one of the most popular series in gaming today, with  more than 167 million players who have played more than 8.6 billion hours since 2014.
