In Kano State, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development shut down four fake fertilizer mixing facilities that were functioning without a permit.

This was disclosed in a statement released on Friday by Mr. Kwaido Sani, Director of the Ministry’s Fertilizer Control Office of the Farm Inputs Support Department.

According to Sani, the Federal Government Task Force found that the facilities were adding unapproved ingredients and blending without the proper authorization to create contaminated fertilizer that was sold to farmers.

Sani revealed that the inspection of the facilities was vital to verify that no company produced fertilizer without prior government approval and to remove contaminated fertilizers from the Nigerian market.

He claims that the National Fertilizer Quality Control Act 2019 and Regulations 2020 will make it mandatory for everyone conducting business to register with the Farm Inputs Support Department and to have the necessary equipment to do so.

“This is a market operation, we are not interested in arresting anybody, our interest is to make people comply with the provisions of this act,” he said.

The Federal Government will not accept any act of sabotage in guaranteeing food security in the nation, according to the Director, who stated that fertiliser is a very important ingredient in agricultural productivity.

He said that a truckload of contaminated fertilizer had been seized as proof, and the defaulting businesses had been sealed.

“We have also found a huge cache of fertiliser blending raw materials, which are not supposed to be sold in the market,” he said.

He stated that after an investigation was complete, the defaulting marketers found in possession of illicit blending raw materials would receive the proper legal repercussions.

Albarka Agro-Allied and Chemical Fertilizer, as well as Nagarta Agro Fertilizer, both located in the Zara village of the Kumbotso Local Government, were the sealed factories.
