Beatrice Itubo, the Rivers State chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, expressed her optimism that the payment of gratuity, death benefits, and pension arrears to retirees will go beyond this initial batch.
Mrs Itubo told our correspondent that due to the current economic condition and high expense of living, the value of the money has deteriorated.
The APC chapter of Rivers State believes it’s unfortunate that the state government is only now paying retired public officials’ gratuities and pension arrears after seven years.
Chris Finebone, the APC’s spokesperson, criticized the state government’s actions in an interview.
Meanwhile, hundreds of retirees in Rivers State are currently being verified.
This came after the state government declared that it would begin paying outstanding gratuities, monthly pension arrears, and death payments to pensioners.
The first batch is for people who retired between June 2014.
During their physical inspection, some retirees spoke with our correspondent and encouraged the state government to follow its word and ensure prompt payment.
